Framework is an evolving collection of mixed media work that weaves together vintage ephemera and sewing techniques to create a tapestry of personal reflection. Largely inspired by the structure and stitching of quilts, these collages reflect on the women in my family, my mother and grandmothers, who have devoted great time to fiber arts and crafts throughout their lives. Building on this exploration of quilting and family, I examine the relationship between material and memory by repurposing book pages, old maps, and discarded prints in my work. Shapes and phrases are deliberately joined with hand stitching and machine sewing. Thick, encrusted textures add rigidity, contrasting the tenderness sometimes associated with quilts. For me, the meditative process of sewing encourages introspection and I aim to encourage viewers to consider their connections to lineage and the idea of home.
